Paul Smith is pleased to announce that a new flagship store opened on 6 May in the prestigious Sanlitun area of Beijing, in partnership with ImagineX.

Arranged over two floors and covering 359sq m, the shop is bright and playful and reflects Paul’s eclectic tastes in art, design, fashion and architecture. Its interior is full of antiques and original artworks, while its exterior is characteristically colourful, made up of vivid pink and yellow textured blocks, and optimistic in feel.

One room on the ground floor displays an extensive selection of Paul Smith women’s and men’s shoes and accessories. The focus of the room is a beautiful, centrally positioned Italian desk from the Sixties by iconic designer Osvaldo Borsani. This is complemented by travertine walls and shelving units crafted from walnut, brass and leather, which were modelled on a mid-century design.

A striking blue polished staircase leading to the first floor dominates the room. The walls either side are hung with some fascinating ephemera and a number of Paul’s paintings and photographs. One of these photos is of the library at Chatsworth House, a stately home in England, which was the inspiration for the suits room in the Paul Smith shops in London and New York.

There are two other rooms on the ground floor, which house the men’s and women’s Paul Smith Mainline collections. The sophistication of the collections is reflected in the décor: Mastercraft iron and brass tables, Italian glass chandeliers and chairs designed by the French designer Raphael in the early Sixties. A focal point of the Men’s Mainline room is a large painting of a snake in the style of 18th-century Dutch zoologist and illustrator Albertus Seba.

Upstairs, the shop is divided into three further rooms. The first has panelled walls, 19th-century French tables and chairs covered in swathes of the Paul Smith Maharam fabric, and houses the Paul Smith London collection. The second and third rooms, displaying the men’s PS Paul Smith and Paul Smith Jeans collections, and the women’s Paul Smith Black Label and Paul by Paul Smith collections, have a more modern feel and feature mid-century English and Italian furniture.
